Reviews in practice

The calculation of deflection and skyline tensile forces in forestry cable yarder systems based on the so-called catenary provides accurate results, as reviews in practice have shown. Furthermore, it was investigated how modern remote sensing methods could support the design process when creating the cable roads as well as when automatically calculating the cable road layouts (length profile). There is still a need for research in this area.

In cooperation with two Swiss forestry companies, measurements of the deflection in the middle of the cable road span and the skyline tensile force at the anchor were carried out with four different loads in May/June and November/December 2020. The measurements were carried out on four cable roads with two to three load configurations in each span.
